Bedazzling, all-original Columbia “Nickeled & Polished Eagle,” manufactured in late 1898. When new, it sold for $3 more than the standard issue Eagle, but for that extra $3, you received a skeletal machine with mirror-like surfaces. Serial number range for most surviving machines is 147,000 – 149.000, and this example falls within that range. In Volume 1 of the Columbia Phonograph Companion, Hazelcorn assigned this phonograph a rarity score of R-7, indicating there were not many of them left. Regardless of how many remain, you will never see a more beautiful version of the fabled early Eagle.
The phonograph is in excellent condition, and all parts have been factory plated and factory polished, including the polished, nickel-plated governor weights, the polished, nickel-plated winding key, the polished, nickel-plated motor-housing, the polished, nickel-plated bedplate, the polished, nickel-plated mandrel, the polished nickel mandrel tag — even the pulley cover and data plates were factory nickeled and factory polished.
The 10″ nickel horn is also original, and it too is in excellent condition, with very little pitting and minimal tarnish.
The cabinet finish is original, as is the cabinet decal. The cabinet retains all of its original rubber feet, its joints are tight, and there are no veneer issues.
The phonograph is in excellent mechanical condition, with a strong motor and a steady governor. It has no trouble making it through a cylinder without the need for rewinding.
