Introduced by Victor in 1902, the Monarch Special (MS) was at the time the best phonograph in the Victor line-up. The MS featured a 10″ turntable, a triple spring motor, and an ornate, dark oak cabinet adorned with heavily carved trim.
This pre-dog Victor MS is immaculate, with no replica parts, no replacement parts, no repaired parts.
Solid oak cabinet retains its original finish and it’s still silky smooth, with no issues. Victor data tag is clean, complete and legible. All of the heavily carved “gingerbread” trim is original. The cabinet joints are all tight, and — with the exception of a single small sliver of wood that’s been nicked off the underside of the right rear corner of the base molding — the cabinet is nearly perfect. Complete original paper license is still affixed to the underside of the baseboard.
Back-bracket enamel is clean and original, as are the decorations.
Clean mechanism, clean turntable, clean original crank. Victor Concert reproducer has a good needle bar, a good diaphragm, and it sounds good too.
The record hold-down is original, and it’s in excellent condition, with clean original nickel plating. The deep violet turntable felt is also original, and though it evidences wear, there’s no insect damage, nor are there any significant rends.
Original Victor Spear Tip oak horn is in excellent condition and has a clean, crisp original Nipper decal and a clean original finish. No splintered wood, no warping, no rim splits, no restoration, no repair. Patent data is blind-stamped into the metal collar and is still legible.
Runs well and sounds great. You will be hard-pressed to find a better Victor MS anywhere.
