Clean, working Mark III Short Wave Tuner. These World War I trench sets were designed by Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Company and assembled by Marconi and different wartime sub-contractors, including Johnson & Phillips, Muirhead, Robert Paul and the Automatic Telegraph Manufacturing Co. (the contractor for this set).

Condition is very good and, as noted above, the radio still works when connected to a strong ground and a longwire outdoor antenna. Panel is pristine, with no cracks, no chips, no other damage. Engraving is crisp and legible everywhere. Original buzzer and buzzer cover. Original perikon detector. Original toggle switches, etc. Chassis is clean, and the wiring is straight. No rust, no corrosion, no damage. Several panel screws have been replaced with period-correct substitutes.

Tightly wound coils and undamaged condensers. Cabinet covering exhibits minor wear consistent with age and use, but overall this historic radio, which was used by ground troops so that pilots flying overhead could alert them to enemy artillery positions, is in remarkably good condition throughout. The instruction cards on the underside of the lid are photo-replicas of the originals. They present well and add considerably to the appearance of the receiver.
