Gorgeous c.1906 Columbia AO cylinder phonograph with a Hawthorne & Sheble flower horn that dates to around the same time. The phonograph is in excellent working order, and it has no replica parts.
Condition is excellent. Original nickel plating, with minimal oxidation and pitting. Original enamel on the casting is still deep black, and the original multi-colored decorations are crisp. The mechanism is in excellent shape, with a clean 3-spring motor that has no trouble making it through multiple cylinders without needing to be rewound. The governor is working properly, and and phonograph sounds great when it plays. Trunion slides easily along the carriage rail, and there’s no damage to the tube. Lift lever is working fine, raising and lowering the reproducer as designed. The reproducer is original, and its the correct D-1 reproducer, with small fingers on the neck that engage with the lift lever mechanism.
Like the mechanism, the ornate, heavily carved cabinet is exceptionally nice, with a pristine original finish and a beautiful original Graphophone decal on front. No missing or damaged trim, no hacked up corners, no issues. Normal oxidation on the latching and handle hardware. Lid latching mechanism is working, and it snugly secures the lid to the base.
The Hawthorne & Sheble morning glory horn is completely original, right down to the hand-painted flowers. It’s also wonderfully compact for a morning glory horn — just 22″ long, with a 19″ diameter bell. Large enough to be noticed, but not so large that it overshadows the phonograph…and small enough to fit almost anywhere. Condition is exceptional. No dings, no dents, no damage, no flaking paint, no fading colors. Even the horn’s exterior retains its original red iridescent sheen.
Crane is original, with normal tarnish and oxidation. As you can see, it’s a rear mount crane, so the lower rod does not hide the beautiful decal in front.
In short, an exquisite, no apologies AO. If you’re looking for a truly special example, you’ve found it.
