Mid 19th century Barlow’s Wheel — known also as the spur wheel — a primitive motor designed to demonstrate how electrical energy can be converted into mechanical energy.
The spur wheel was invented in the 1820’s by the British physicist Peter Barlow, and its operation is fairly simple. The legs of a horseshoe magnet are placed on either side of the wheel, and the well beneath the wheel is filled with mercury. One terminal of a battery is connected to the hub of the wheel; the other terminal is connected to the well of mercury. When the electrical circuit is closed, the wheel rotates, driven by the principles of electro-magnetism.
Condition is good, the instrument is original throughout, and the wheel rotates freely.
Measures approximately 7″ x 5″ x 4″. Shipping weight approximately 4 lb.
