Exceptionally nice Edison Home Phonograph manufactured in late 1897 or early 1898. The phonograph is housed in a cabinet whose base is decaled with a large, decorative advertisement for its distributor, Hawthorne & Sheble, headquartered in Philadelphia and Edison’s largest dealer on the east coast of the United States. The decal, impossible to overlook and placed there against Edison’s expressed wishes, led to Hawthorne & Sheble’s finding themselves on Edison’s infamous and ever-growing blacklist of disobedient dealers. The decal is original, as are all other aspects of the phonograph.
As you can see, the phonograph is in outstanding condition and includes several original accessories: an undamaged set of hearing tubes (the ribbed rubber tubes are a bit stiff but still useable), an undamaged speaking tube, and an excellent 15″ all-brass Hawthorne & Sheble horn.
The phonograph has a serial number in the mid-3000’s and is equipped with an Edison Automatic Reproducer secured to the carriage with early, single-screw clips. The phonograph has a brass mandrel, brass governor weights, and an early badged “National Phonograph Co.” crank.
The phonograph has glossy original enamel on the bedplate and prominent original pin-striping everywhere. The cabinet finish is original, and the original lid decal — like the rest of the phonograph — is nearly perfect.
The phonograph is in good working order.
This is a beautiful and early Home Phonograph in a very uncommon cabinet. Its new owner will be delighted.
