Clean, functional Edison Universal Projecting Kinetoscope, manufactured in Orange, New Jersey ca. 1904 — the first year of production. With the exception of the crank and the wire-spring drive belt, this historic, eminently collectible projector is original throughout, right down to the two-part, folding baseboard and the carbon arc lamp house.

Condition overall is excellent. Metal surfaces are clean, with some oxidation and paint wear on the lamphouse, but nothing excessive. Japanned surfaces on the castings are likewise clean, with glossy enamel and only scattered minor marks consistent with age. Nice patina on the lacquered brass lens barrels.

Projection and stereopticon lenses are original, and both are correct. Lens elements are clear, with no chips or other visible damage. In addition to the carbon arc burner installed in the lamp house, there’s a limelight that was included with it when I found it and that I’ll send that along too.

Mechanism runs smoothly. Pulleys are in good shape.

The shutter gears are working properly, and the shutter axle revolves smoothly, but the batwing has disintegrated. A suitable replacement could probably be made out of carboard, plastic or thin sheet metal.

There’s a hairline repair to the casting below the stanchion that supports the stereopticon lens. It appears to be very stable and does not appear to compromise the stability (or appearance) of the projector.

Clean original baseboard, with its original finish still intact and its original hardware.

Includes several period lantern slides for the stereopticon set-up.
