Manufactured in Rixdorf, Germany by Fritz Puppel, the exquisite Lucca phonograph shares traits with Pathe, Columbia and Bettini machines from the same era.
Like a Pathe, the Lucca has a floating horn that advances along a feedscrew in a manner similar to Pathe flip-tops with Orpheus attachments.
Like a Bettini, the Lucca has an aluminum reproducer with an aluminum diaphragm, anchored to which is a ball stylus supported by a delicate “spider” assembly.
Like a Columbia, the Lucca is compact to the point of resembling a toy, but it is not a toy — far from from it. The Lucca is thoughtfully engineered, beautifully constructed, and capable of coaxing full-throated sound from cylinder grooves with its tiny reproducer and spun aluminum horn, the latter of which weighs less than 3 ounces.
This Lucca comes from the celebrated collection of Jean-Paul Agnard, and it is possibly the world’s nicest surviving example. It runs well and has no replica parts. Even the paper-thin aluminum horn, which on other Lucca phonographs has typically been replaced with a thick Pathe aluminum horn, is original.
The cabinet is clean, the finish is original, there is no insect damage anywhere, and the beautiful full-color cabinet decal is original and nearly mint.
With lid in place, the phonographs measures just 9″ wide by 6″ deep by 8″ high. It comes with its original reproducer and its original recorder and needs nothing to be enjoyed a immediately.
