The world’s first home theatre outfit, the Home Kinetoscope was among Edison’s greatest commercial failures. It sold for a king’s ransom when new, and it used proprietary 22 millimeter “safety film” (less likely to catch fire and divided into 3 parallel tracks — each 6mm wide) that an operator would spool through first in one direction, then back in the other direction, and then a third time in the same direction as the first.

This example is clean and correct, and it can still run film. Other than some blistering paint on the top of the cabinet’s lid and some oxidation on the cabinet’s latches, the outfit has not yielded to the ravages of time.

Mechanism is working properly, and the shutter runs smoothly as the crank is turned. Both reels are original, and both are correct for their respective arms.

The arm assembly and reels are likewise correct and in good shape. The lid strap is a replacement, as is the crank, but the thumb-nut that secures the crank to the crankshaft, which is typically missing, is present and correct.

Everything included with the set can be neatly housed inside of the case.
