C. 1875 Joshua Billcliff Wet Plate Camera With 2 Repeating Backs For Cartes De Visite
Beautifully made rigid-bed wet plate camera probably dating to the mid-1870’s and signed “Billcliff Camera Maker Manchester” on the camera bed and both of the repeating backs. The smaller back measures 16″ x 5″ (excluding the mount) and takes 6 cartes de visite, each measuring approximately 1 1/2″ by 1 3/4″. The larger back measures 16″ x 6 and takes 4 cartes de visite measuring 2 1/4″ x 1 3/4″.
Condition is very good, and the camera is original throughout, including the red leather bellows, the wood finish, and the lens and the leather lens cover. Both backs are original, as well, including their ground glass focusing plates. Camera and backs exhibit normal artifacts of age and use, but no signs of abuse or neglect. No missing hardware, and the brass clips on the backs are still functional.
