Manufactured for the US Signal Corps by Western Electric in 1918, the SCR-59 was a vital piece of communications gear during the first World War. Compact yet technologically robust, it was capable of receiving voice and code transmissions from other aircraft as well as from troops on the ground. The radio was typically bolted to the side of a WWI fighter plane’s cockpit, with controls that were easily manipulated by the pilot or flight navigator.
Condition of this SCR-59 is excellent. All knobs and switches move easily, the hard rubber panel is clean and undamaged, all small hardware is original, the cabinet retains its original finish, all brass fittings and mounting flanges are original and have a glowing patina but no rust or corrosion. Wiring diagram on the underside of the lid is clean and complete. Battery compartment is likewise and complete, with its original B-battery bracket still in place.
All three Western Electric VT1 receiving tubes have good filaments but are otherwise untested.
When closed, the receiver measures just 11″ x 9″ x 5″. Shipping weight, properly packed, will be approximately 20 lb.
