A year before Atwater Kent started to sell factory-assembled breadboard radios, one of the company’s distributors — Reinhard Brothers, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota — began to build open-mounted radios on thick, polished bakelite sheets using Atwater Kent parts. These radios must have been somewhat popular among enthusiasts because by the end of 1922, Atwater Kent had seized the moment and initiated production of its own line of radios, similar in design to the Reinhard sets, but assembled on wood “breadboards” rather than bakelite sheets.
Today, more than a century later, these 1st generation Atwater Kent radios — on their distinctive resin slabs whose corners are supported by conical rubber feet and whose components are connected by loping, fabric-clad wires — are considered eminently collectible.
And here we have the only known, guaranteed authentic Reinhard Brothers/Atwater Kent breadboard radio tuner in existence. Not a replica, not a fake, not a fantasy set. A bonafide 3-circuit tuner assembled and sold by Reinhard Brothers in 1922.
Condition is excellent. Beautiful bakelite board, with no damage, no repairs, no issues. Original conical feet, original wiring, original binding post assemblies, original engraving, original everything. All three Atwater Kent tuning components (a Coupled Circuit Tuner and a pair of Mounted Variometers) are clean and working properly, with tightly wound coils. Glossy brown bakelite everywhere, with no cracks, no repairs.
A pristine tuner throughout.
