The Edison Bell Lambertphone was marketed in the early 20th century as a means to upgrade the performance of your Gem, Standard or Home Phonograph to that of a native Lambertphone, with the latter representing — in the opinion of the Lambert Company, Ltd — the pinnacle of recorded sound reproduction.
The Lambert Combination (an attachment that could be swapped out for your Edison phonograph’s factory-installed carriage and reproducer in a matter of minutes) comprised a Matthews spider reproducer (Bettini pattern, but a bit smaller and lighter), coupled to a Rawlinson Patent Sound Tight Joint mounted on a cast iron Lambert carriage. The photographs show how this elaborate affair looks and works. A synopsis of the apparatus from the excellent Fabrizio & Paul compendium, Antique Phonographs and Accessories, is also pictured.
Like a Bettini attachment, the Lambert Combination is well made and beautifully machined.
One thing that is beyond debate with respect to the sonic attributes of the Edison Bell Lambertphone is this: it’s loud, very loud, particularly when its rolling across the surface of a Lambert Ebony cylinder, two of which are included in their beautiful original “Elephant” boxes. Also included is the original 2-Clip Edison Bell Standard carriage (in which is mounted an Edison Automatic Recorder), a second Rawlinson Sound Tight Joint, and a very scarce Columbia Claraphone headset, whose bowl-shaped earpieces amplify the already loud output of the reproducer to fairly astonishing levels.
A rare, unusual and quite wonderful offering that includes everything pictured. You’re not likely to ever see it repeated.
