Early James W. Queen & Co. “Whirling Machine” for demonstrating centrifugal force. Manufactured in Philadelphia, PA. According to Pike, it was also used to show that the earth is an oblate spheroid revolving (necessarily) on its shortest axis.

The apparatus is in good condition, and it’s still working. It consists of a large brass hoop fastened to a spindle, driven by a pulley. As the crank is turned, the hoop rotates. The faster the crank is turned, the more oblong the shape of the rotating hoop.

Signed on the top side of base with manufacturer’s blind stamp.

Approximately 18″ wide by 19″ wide by 7″ deep.

A fascinating piece of scientific history from a premier American purveyor of early technical apparatus.
