Stunning Clarke pattern skeletal magneto electric machine housed in a glass-sided cabinet with a storage drawer for the handles and wires. The apparatus dates to the 1860’s and belonged to the late John Milton Williams, whose collection of telegraphy, telephony, wireless radio and early electrical items was pretty much beyond compare.
Condition is excellent, close to mint, and like most of the electrical items that were part of Mr. Williams’ collection, it still works.
Enameled surfaces are clean, braided wire leading to and from the handles is pristine, purple felt covering on the coils is spotless, and the purple felt on the top side of the base is likewise just about perfect.
Bone handle on the crank has an old hairline but is otherwise undamaged. All the binding post assemblies are original, complete and undamaged. The magneto runs quietly when the crank is turned, and it generates a shock when both handles are held. Extra drive cords are included, as are Mr. Williams original hand-written instructions.
An amazing piece, and an amazingly beautiful one.
With the glass cover in place, it measures approximately 12″ x 8″ x 10″. Shipping weight, properly packed, be approximately 20 lb.
