1900 Eldridge Johnson Type C Phonograph w/Johnson Reproducer
$3,750.00
No Replica Parts
Introduced in 1900, the Type C Talking Machine was machinist Eldridge Johnson’s first attempt at designing a phonograph that was not largely derivative of a Berliner Gramophone.
This fine example of a Johnson Type C is complete and working, with no replica parts. It comes with its original zinc bell horn and its original Eldridge R. Johnson Concert Sound Box.
The 14″ horn is in good shape, with clean original paint and original gold pinstriping that’s still prominent. Fittings are likewise clean and beautiful, with some scattered light pitting in the nickel-plating, but nothing distracting.
Cabinet finish is clean and original, with no issues. Data plate is legible; traveling arm is clean and undamaged.
The mechanism runs smoothly for an early Berliner-era phonograph, and as you can see in the pictures, it’s clean, with no issues.
The Eldridge Johnson Concert reproducer is likewise in good shape, and it sounds good given its sonic limitations.
The turntable sits level on the spindle, and its sides don’t rub against against the dust ring. The brake works properly in both positions.
The crank is original, and it’s the correct, short-shank crank for a Type C, whose crankshaft extends to the exterior of the cabinet.
