Introduced by Victor in 1901, the Monarch (Type M) was at the time the best phonograph in the Victor line-up. It featured a 10″ turntable, a double spring motor, and an ornate oak cabinet whose triple-tiered base was topped with intricate gingerbread trim.
This example is in excellent condition throughout. Moreover, the finish of its original Victor wood horn matches perfectly the finish of the phonograph that the horn adorns.
Solid oak cabinet retains its original finish, with no issues, just scattered minor marks consistent with age and authenticity. Victor data tag is clean, complete and legible. All of the carved “gingerbread” trim is original. The cabinet joints are all tight, and the baseboard is still securely attached to base.
Back-bracket enamel is clean and original, as are the decorations.
Victor Exhibition reproducer has a good needle bar, a good diaphragm, and it sounds good too.
The original turntable felt is present, with an overlay from Gettysburg Antiques
Original Victor oak horn has a clean original finish. Patent data is blind-stamped into the metal collar and is still legible. The “Nipper” decal was made by Gregg Cline to replace the faded original. It is colorful and crisp and identical to the original in all respects except age.
The phonograph runs well and sounds great.
