1914 Clapp Eastham Blitzen Radio Receiving Set

$4,500.00

With Optional Loading Coil, Outboard Clapp Eastham Universal Type Ferron Detector & Murdock 55 Headphones

Among the earliest “all-in-one” receiving sets, the Blitzen radio — introduced by Clapp Eastham in 1912 — could be purchased in at least four different configurations, depending on what was required by the operator.

What all of these versions had in common was a variable tuning condenser, a fixed phone condenser, and a small but exquisitely made inductive tuner (30 panel taps!) — with everything factory assembled in a compact (approx. 10″ x 6″ x 6″) mahogany cabinet.

For an upcharge of several dollars, you could purchase an optional loading coil (factory-mounted on the right side), and if you were willing to forego the radio’s onboard Ferron detector, typically mounted on the rear interior of the cabinet, you could purchase the receiver for a few dollars less than the standard configuration.

Condition of this outfit is excellent overall, and the receiver’s interior is pristine. The Universal Ferron Detector is complete and correct, and the Murdock 55 headset has good drivers. The Clapp Eastham tag on the underside of the lid is crisp and legible, and the detector stand is signed on back of the mineral holder.

Rare, beautifully made, seldom available in any condition, much less as clean as this example.
