Tested & Working
Beautiful, all-original “long board” Model 9 breadboard radio manufactured by Atwater Kent in October, 1923.
The 4445 was the first of three versions of the Model 9 and the only version that did not feature an integral wiring harness. Assembled on 26 1/2″ mahogany boards left over from the production of the Atwater Kent 4066 (Model 7), the 4445 was in production for less than 2 months and used a pair of inductive tuners in a quasi-regenerative circuit that the company hoped would be an improvement over the temperamental circuits in the discontinued 4052 and 4066.
Condition of this example is excellent throughout.
The early orange/red mahogany board retains its original finish and exhibits only minimal crazing consistent with age and authenticity. All of the chocolate brown bakelite is in excellent condition, with no chips, no cracks, no issues. The engraved numbers and hash marks on all the dials are crisp and clear, and there are no damaged or missing backing plates. The wire on the tuners is still tightly wound, and there are no stains anywhere. The paint on the TA island is original and in excellent condition. Potting tar and transformers (both good) are undisturbed. The wiring on the underside of the board is pristine, as are the staples. All four feet are original. Both paper tags are present, and both are original.
Comes as pictured, with 4 brass base, tipped 1/4 amp 01A tubes. All four tubes have good emissions and have been tested in the radio, which still works when configured with an appropriate DC power supply, a vintage horn loudspeaker, and a longwire outdoor antenna.
