We know of only two examples of the Atwater Kent Model 8 breadboard, a unicorn in the world of radio collecting. The other example is an outright fake, constructed around a replica Type 5a TA island.
This example has no replica parts, although it is unknown whether it is a restored original Model 8 or a re-creation of an original Model 8 using the correct factory parts. The board itself appears to be authentic, right down to the distinct orange/red hue of the finish. That said, we can warrant only that the electrical parts themselves (Type 11 tuner, Type F variable condenser, RF Transformer Coil, Type 5A island) are original.
The radio belonged to a veteran collector who acquired it more than 40 years ago. A few wires were re-soldered beneath the bakelite top on the TA island, and the exterior of the island has been repainted, but the TA is otherwise in excellent original condition, with the RF and AF transformers potted neatly in tar in a half-moon-shaped compartment.
The Type 11 tuner is pristine, with no signs of wear or restoration.
Like the TA, the variable condenser has been repainted, but the paint on both the island and the condenser is essentially identical to “factory green.”
The status of the RF and AF transformers is unknown. The tube filaments light when the radio is powered up and the on/off switch is activated, but there is no output signal from the speaker binding posts. Visible beneath the bakelite top is a de-soldered wire that is likely contributing to the lack of output, either wholly or in part.
The radio includes 5 good emissions brass base tipped tubes, but the set is being offered for historical purposes only, with no assurances stated or implied that it’s still suitable for broadcast reception.
