Beautiful, working 1923 Atwater Kent 4445 breadboard radio, better known as the “long board” Model 9. The long board 9 was made only briefly in the fall of 1923. It was replaced by the 4445-A (the short board 9), which was the company’s last inductively-tuned radio and the first to feature an integral wiring harness for battery connections instead of binding posts.
Condition of this example is excellent, and it still works.
Original green paint on the radio’s TA island is excellent, with minimal wear. Glossy brown bakelite parts everywhere, with no scratches, no cracks, no chips, no issues. Clean, undisturbed potting tar inside the island, and both original AF transformers are good.
Both tuners (Type 11 and Coupled Circuit) are in excellent condition and working properly.
Under the board, it’s original everywhere. Original staples, original paper tags, original feet, etc. Stain-free original wire still tightly wound around the tuner forms. Tuning dials have crisp original nomenclature, and they turn easily. The potentiometer and RF amplifier island are both in excellent condition. Beautiful original brass hardware with only moderate tarnish.
Board finish is clean, and both end caps are still tightly secured to the main board, with no swelling.
The radio comes with a complete set of good emissions brass base, tipped 01A tubes.
To operate the radio, you’ll need a good regulated DC power supply (such as an ARBEIII, available from ARBEIII.com), a longwire outdoor antenna (approximately 120 feet long 15 feet off the ground), and some experience at the helm of an inductively-tuned 1920’s battery radio.
