Clean, working Grebe CR-13 regenerative shortwave battery radio, manufactured in Richmond Hill, New York in 1923. The radio is arguably one of the best-performing regenerative battery radios Grebe ever manufactured, and — optimized for the 80-300 meter range — it’s adept at capturing a portion of the broadcast band as well as shortwave transmissions.
Condition of the receiver is excellent throughout. The brushed bakelite panel is clean and undamaged, with no chips, no cracks, no extra holes, no filled holes, no blotchy areas. Panel engraving is crisp and legible everywhere. Tuning dials are original and in excellent condition, with no issues. All binding post assemblies are original and complete and in excellent condition.
Chassis is in excellent condition, with original wiring throughout. Tuners are all tightly wound, with clean wire and nice original shellac. Variable condenser works properly, and it’s clean, with no corrosion or even any significant tarnish. Tube sockets are pristine. Fumed oak cabinet is in nice shape, with its original finish still intact and some finish wear evident but nothing significant. All cabinet joints are snug and secure.
The original rubber “doughnuts” that coupled the fine-tuning thumbwheels with the larger dials have of course dried out and are no viable, but the radio does not require them for tuning; they simply make it easier to effect incremental changes in the condenser and tuners.
The radio has been tested, and it still works. It can be a tricky set to tune — and quite challenging for the novice — but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find the radio to be both sensitive and selective. Comes with good detector and RF amplifier tubes.
