Beautiful Columbia BG “Sovereign” cylinder phonograph. Introduced in 1906, the machine was loaded with deluxe features, including a four-spring motor, a solid mahogany cabinet, nickel plating on the entire top works, a spring-loaded Lyric reproducer, and an extended mandrel that was large enough to accomodate both conventional 2-minute cylinders and Columbia’s extended length Twentieth Century cylinders.

Condition is excellent, close to mint. The nickel-plating on the mechanism is original, and it exhibits no pitting, no flaking, no corrosion, just a beautiful patina. The extended-length mandrel is perfect, with no dings, no dents, and no rotational eccentricity as it revolves. The carriage slides easily along the trunion rail, and the reproducer is not locked into the carriage head; it can be easily removed by loosening the thumbscrew. Nice original mandrel pulley, with no chips or repairs. The huge motor and gearing are likewise in excellent condition, and the governor is working properly.

The solid mahogany cabinet is about as nice as you’ll find on any BG. Original finish (both base and lid), original paper labels, original cabinet decals (both front and back), original handle, original latching hardware, etc. No damage to the wood, no missing corner columns, no patches in the lid, no issues. The shellac is still smooth to the touch, with virtually no crazing — an exceptional, and exceptionally original, BG cabinet.

The 15″ spun aluminum horn is a replica that came from Ron Sitko about 10 years ago. As you can see in the pictures, it’s identical to an original spun aluminum horn, except that, unlike most original 15″ spun aluminum horns, it doesn’t look like it was just pulled up from the bottom of Lake Michigan.
