Interesting group of 19th century physical, electrical & philosophical instruments, together with Essex Institute President Francis Peabody’s signed personal copy of the Manual of Magnetism by Daniel Davis, Jr. Included in the group are:
1) an early Ramsden pattern friction machine sold by Massiott & Cie in Paris.
2) a Universal Discharger sold by Negretti & Zambra in London.
3) a Fountain In A Vacuum sold by H.B. & W.O. Chamberlain in Boston.
The instruments are signed by their makers date from about 1860 to 1885. They are all in good estate condition, with normal evidence of wear. Signs of age and use, but no signs of abuse. No damage to any of the glass parts.
Peabody’s copy of Manual of Magnetism includes a catalog of offerings from Davis appended to the back of the volume. The copy is signed by Peabody in pen, with “Salem” written by him in pencil beneath his signature. The Essex Institute plate is affixed to the interior of the cover. The book is original throughout and has not been re-backed.
Everything will be partially dismantled prior to shipping to ensure safe transit, so some re-assembly will be required, along with basic mechanical intuition and some familiarity with the instruments.
