Exceedingly rare Morse Automatic Telegraph, ca. 1898-99. You will likely never see another one.
Invented by Walter Phillips and Roderick Weiny, manufactured by the American Graphophone Co. at their factory in Bridgeport CT, and marketed by JH Bunnell in New York City, the Weiny Phillips’ Telegraph system was designed to greatly accelerate, through automation and abbreviation, the speed at which words could be sent or received over a telegraph wire.
This example is in excellent condition throughout.
Original clockwork motor, original brass drive chains, original stylus, original paper tape, etc. Mechanism is working, and the governor regulates the speed at which tape is fed beneath the stylus.
Cabinet is clean, with no damage to the wood. Original decal is nearly perfect.
Bunnell relay appears to be complete with the exception of the spring.
Included with the telegraph are several printed messages inside a wooden box with a sliding top.
With the supply reel retracted, the crank removed, and the lid in place, the apparatus measures approximately 16″ x 11″ x 15″. Shipping weight approximately 45 lb.
