Brilliantly executed replica of a c.1914 Deforest RJ-4 Audion Control Box. It’s actually not a replica, it’s a forgery, and it was made by the late Phil Weingarten, a gifted craftsman who became something of a legend in the late 1900’s for “re-interpreting” valuable wireless-era radio components using (mostly) authentic antique parts.
As you can see from the photos, the control box is virtually indistinguishable from an original RJ-4, with the exception of the internal wiring (it’s from the 20’s, not the teens), and the lack of a serial number on the underside of the base.
Sitting on a shelf just a few inches away from you, you’d likely never be able to distinguish this detector from an authentic RJ-4, regardless of your level of expertise.
Although the RJ-4 itself is a fake, the Deforest Spherical Audion is authentic, and it’s in good shape, with clean cloth sheathing and leads that are long enough to reach the binding posts. The tube’s filament is open, and it’s being included for display purposes only.
