Beautiful Berliner Improved (aka Trademark) Gramophone manufactured in New York in the late 1890’s. This is an early side-brake model that dates to 1897 or early 1898. The brass horn dates to 1899. The phonograph comes with an original Berliner record box that dates to roughly the same time period.
Condition of both the phonograph and the record box is excellent, and — with the exception of a replacement carrying strap on the record box — all parts are original.
The cabinet finish is likewise original, and it’s still smooth to the touch.
The cabinet decal is original, and it’s nearly perfect.
Original Clark Johnson reproducer, original crank, original horn and horn cradle, original horn elbow, original turntable, original record hold down (correct slanted knurling, not cross-hatched like on a Victor), original motor, original side brake, original turntable felt, original support arm, original traveling arm, etc.
There are a few minor dings in the horn and some scattered areas of oxidation (visible in the pictures), but the condition of the horn overall is quite good, and there is no veining in the brass, no cracks or hairlines.
The support arm has a novel knurled release nut that allows you to remove it from the base without tools. It’s not known whether this was done by Berliner on special customer request or if it was a dealer modification, but it’s clearly original to the phonograph or was implemented shortly after its original sale.
The phonograph runs well and — for a Berliner Trademark — runs quietly.
