Beautiful second-style top-wind AJ with a smooth-sided spindle. The early AJ was Columbia’s only top wind phonograph.
Original horn, crank, support arm, traveling arm, cabinet finish, cabinet decal, and an early, seldom seen Columbia “Improved” reproducer, which was pulled from production in the wake of threatened litigation from Victor due to its resemblance to Victor’s Concert Sound Box.
Scattered minor dings in the horn, but no cracks or damage. Horn paint is original and still glossy.
Cabinet finish is still smooth, and the cabinet decal is excellent, with minimal wear and bright colors. Cabinet hardware is clean, with bright original nickel plating. The oxide finish on the cabinet’s decorative handle original, and it’s nearly perfect.
Reproducer is clean, with bright original nickel plating.
On/off lever and speed control are working properly.
Clean original spring-loaded cabinet clasps (when these ball-clasps are pulled, the top of the case can be lifted right off the base — see first photograph).
The leather elbow is an old, well-made replacement (tight, internal stitching) and the turntable is a flawlessly executed reproduction, identical to the original. The phonograph is otherwise about as nice a Top Wind AJ as you could want, and it runs well.
Includes an early 7″ Columbia Climax record.
