Introduced in 1903, the Victor D was the Victor Talking Machine Company’s flagship phonograph until the Victor 6 came into the line-up three years later. The D featured a 12″ turntable, a triple spring motor, and an ornate, dark oak cabinet adorned with heavily carved trim.

This Victor D is exceptionally nice, and the 24″ Standard Metal Mfg. Co. flower horn that adorns it takes the term “gothic splendor” to a new level.

Condition is excellent. The solid oak cabinet has been hand-waxed (multiple coats) and buffed to a lustrous glow. All of the heavily carved “gingerbread” trim is original, with no inserts or repairs, just scattered marks and nicks consistent with age and authenticity. Victor data plate is clean and legible. Original paper license is still affixed to the underside of the baseboard, and the serial number on the license matches the serial number on the data plate.

Back-bracket enamel is clean and original, as are the decorations, which are nearly perfect.

Clean mechanism, clean turntable, undamaged original crank. Victor Exhibition reproducer has a good needle bar, a good diaphragm, and it sounds great too. The turntable felt has been replaced, but the phonograph otherwise has no other later made parts.

The Standard Metal 11-panel flower horn is in excellent condition, with minimal oxidation and crisp, vibrantly colored flowers and stems. Scattered marks and blemishes consistent with age and authenticity, but for a 120-year-old hand-painted horn, it’s in remarkable shape.

The phonograph runs well, sounds great and will be the focal point of any room in which it’s placed.
