1904 Victor Monarch Special (MS) Phonograph With 22″ Spear Tip Wood Horn

$4,500.00

Introduced by Victor in 1902, the “MS” (Monarch Special) was the company’s flagship 10″ phonograph. It featured a triple spring motor and an ornate, dark oak cabinet adorned with heavily carved trim. When new, it sold for $50, about a month’s wages for the average American worker. In 1904, Victor introduced a rear mount MS, with a tapering tonearm and an Exhibition reproducer.

This rear mount Victor MS is as nice as they come and needs nothing to be enjoyed immediately. It runs well, it sounds great, and it’s gorgeous. The aftermarket 22″ Spear Tip horn was made by phonograph Eduardo Portillo, and its dark oak finish is a perfect match for that of the phonograph.

The phonograph itself is original throughout, with no replica parts, no replacement parts, no damaged parts, no repaired parts.

Solid oak cabinet retains its original finish and it’s still silky smooth, with no issues. Victor data tag is clean, complete and legible. All of the heavily carved “gingerbread” trim is original and undamaged.

Back-bracket enamel is clean and original, as are the decorations. The back-bracket’s fragile blue highlights are still intact.

Clean mechanism, clean turntable, clean original crank. Victor Exhibition reproducer has a good needle bar, good gaskets, and a good diaphragm.
