Uncommon A.C. Gilbert 4018 breadboad radio manufactured ca. 1921 in New Haven, Connecticut. It uses a single tube for a detector, a rheostat to control the tube’s filament voltage, and a primitive loose coupler — in conjunction with a pair of variable condensers — for tuning.
Condition of the radio is good throughout, particularly for this set, which typically exhibits some battle scars. All of the components on this set are original, still functional and still relatively clean. The small hardware is solid brass, so there’s tarnish on the binding post nuts and tube contacts, as you’d expect and would probably want.
Variable tuning coil on the loose coupler slides easily along the rail, and the original wiring — with the correct green silk sheathing — is still tightly wrapped around both tuning forms.
Original A.C. Gilbert tag is still in place on the top side of the board. Board finish is original, and it’s in good shape as you can see. No missing binding post nuts, and all of the binding post assemblies are original to the radio.
The radio can be difficult to tune (the loose coupler is twitchy), but it still works and can pick up a few local stations when connected to a good ground and a longwire outdoor antenna.
