Beautiful, working 1922 Atwater Kent 3945 breadboard radio, better known as the Model 2. This hard-to-find factory-built set comes with a set of good brass base, tipped and labeled RCA Radiotron tubes — a 1 amp UV 200 detector tube, and two 1/4 amp UV-201a amplifier tubes.
Condition is very good throughout, and the radio still works well. If you’re patient with it and willing to experiment at different times of the day, it will tune a broad range of AM stations when connected to a longwire outdoor antenna and a good regulated DC power supply (I’d recommend an ARBEIII).
Nice original green paint on the radio’s TA island, with some moderate wear, mostly on or near the mounting flange. Glossy brown bakelite parts everywhere, with no scratches, no cracks, no chips, no issues. Clean, undisturbed potting tar inside the island, and both original AF transformers are good.
Both tuners (Coupled Circuit and Mounted Variometer) are in excellent condition and working properly. As was the case with all Model 2 radios, the Variometer, which adds regeneration to the radio’s circuit, was installed by the end user; Atwater Kent did not have a regeneration license and could not legally sell a radio that would regenerate. But the company could legally sell a stand-alone Variometer that the user could and would mount in the intentionally large gap on the board between the Coupled Circuit tuner and the TA island.
Board finish is original, and it’s in excellent condition, with some light crazing but no significant wear or damage. Under the board, it’s pristine: original wiring; original staples, original feet, etc. Tuning dials have crisp original nomenclature, and they turn easily. Beautiful original brass hardware with only moderate tarnish.
An excellent, working example of an eminently collectible early breadboard radio.
