When it was new in 1923 the design of the Herald loudspeaker was twenty-five years ahead of its time. Today, it’s probably fifty years ahead of our own time, and it’s doubtful that time will ever catch up with it.
The speaker stands 30″ high, and its exponential horn consists of 4 triangular panels that spring from the base like a Euclidean flower to form a diamond-shaped bell at the top. The base is configured similarly, but in the opposite direction.
The effect is fairly mind-bending.
Condition of this example is very good, and the speaker still works. There’s a thin sliver of pot metal that’s flaked off the rear outside edge of the pot metal cover atop the base, but it’s almost undetectable, and relative to the pot metal problems that plague the handful of other surviving Herald horn speakers, it’s insignificant in size and scope.
The pot metal collar that protrudes from the top of the base and secures the horn in a bayonet style mount is complete and structurally sound. The speaker’s speckled enamel exterior is original and in good shape. It’s stable on both the horn and the base, with minimal deterioration. The driver cord is likewise in good shape, with metal tips that are still firmly planted in the fabric sheathing.
The driver is original, the driver coils are good, and — as noted above — the speaker still works.
