The design of the rare and very collectible Model 50 is unlike that of any other Atwater Kent battery set from the era. The radio was AK’s attempt to emulate a superheterodyne circuit, which at the time was patent-protected by RCA. Each of the radio’s four quadrants is shielded from all the others, and the shielding was essential to the radio’s proper operation.

Condition of both the radio and the horn is excellent. The radio has been partially restored, with new enamel applied to its painted metal panel, and a new-old-stock Atwater Kent wiring harness exchanged for the badly frayed original harness. The radio is otherwise clean and correct, with an excellent cabinet finish (appears to be original), all of its original compartment covers (with their original paint intact), all of its original machine screws, and what appear to be all of its original electrical components. The interior metal case is in excellent condition, with no damage and no repairs.

The radio measures approximately 21″ x 13″ x 8″.

The Atwater Kent Model M horn speaker has a bakelite driver, and the tone adjustment wheel is working properly. The textured paint is in excellent condition, as you can see in the pictures. The speaker’s output is loud and clear, and the speaker is ideally suited to the radio, both electrically and cosmetically. The driver cord is in good shape, and both metal tips are still firmly planted in the fabric sheathing.

The speaker stands approximately 25″ tall, with a bell diameter of 15″.

All tubes are good, and — as noted above — the radio and speaker still work when properly configured, carefully tuned and connected to an appropriate regulated DC power supply.
